At the base of a colossal tower deep beneath the earth, a primitive village struggles to survive in the rock. Brutal labor occupies the short lives of the people and the town elders teach that this is an idyllic existence, and the people believe them... Until one day disaster strikes and a band of children are forced to make a perilous journey to the surface. Isolated from their home and led by strange guides with their own agenda, they struggle to overcome sabotage, betrayal and the mysterious threat that has been waiting for centuries above them... The only way is up.

At the very beginning, I had two thoughts -- "Gosh, this is like City of Ember" and "No, Creon was Antigone's father!". Much to my delight the story moved away from the City of Ember motif into its own very compelling storyline. It took a little bit for me to re-map the Classical names, but each character quickly became his or her own person as the story progressed.

A criticism I have of many books in this genre is that the reader is sometimes let into too many secrets and plans before the characters experience them. Sometimes, this adds understanding but often it seems like a lazy narrative instead of character-driven occurrences. Flight of the Far Walkers does not suffer from this -- each page turn holds unknown plot developments. The reader experiences twists and turns as the characters do, making the story that much more enthralling.

I look forward to the next books in the series!

Flight of the Far Walkers Jack Fennell 9781450541213 Books Reviews

This is not the type of book I usually read and it started a little slow. But it held me and soon pulled me into this very imaginative story. This is a new, young writer who is obviously very talented with a great imagination. I recommend this book and I'm looking forward to his follow-on. I feel sure that as he gains experience, his work will be even better.
I really enjoyed this new work of fantasy fiction, and can hardly wait for the second installment to be published! You will truly enjoy reading this book and uncovering the hidden motives of the characters and each of their unique links to the past. It's an interesting story about a group of people who were forced (for reasons you'll have to discover) to live in a somewhat barren cave-like environment, and have developed various specializations to help them utilize their limited resources. They are forced by a natural disaster to send a small group of explorers to the surface in search of a new water source...or so you think. The author has created an interesting hierarchy of roles in the society, which I think was well planned, and he is talented with descriptive writing. If you like fantasy fiction series, then I recommend that you begin reading this one. I look forward to boasting about how I read it before it was popular!
Flight of the Far Walkers is a great debut for Jack Fennell into the fantasy fiction world. It has all the elements of a great story, from fascinating characters to sudden plot twists and a fascinating new world to lose yourself in. Throughout the book the reader is reminded of the legacy of Greek and Roman myth, and is skillfully transported into a world full of drama and intrigue; Selsee.
Last week, I sat down with "Flight of the Far Walkers," expecting much of the same underwhelming experience I've had with most self-published books.

I was blown away. Well, maybe that's not the best way of putting it. To put it more accurately, I was sucked into the underground world of Selsee, with its dark caves, mysterious "flickermen" and ruling "Panopticon." 150 pages later, I woke up wondering where my afternoon had gone and what next was in store for the band of children who make up the book's main characters.

Yes, it's that good.

There are some weaknesses with the book; namely, there are so many characters as to be confusing at first. As the story moves along, however, the problem fades away; each character has a clear personality and backstory, and soon enough it's easy to distinguish between them. Mr. Fennell does a fantastic job of leaving clues as to the direction of the plot and then turning them on their heads with a big reveal of one of the numerous twists. I literally couldn't put down this book at times out of sheer wonder for what was going to happen next, which is something I can't say for many of the books I've read recently.

This is by and large an excellent first effort from Mr. Fennell, and I really can't wait to read the next book in what looks to be an exciting series.
